Three Favorite Music Sites
I turn 32 tomorrow and I am feeling slightly nostalgic. As a result I’m thinking a little bit about my days an avid techno-head. Here’s three sites that I visit when I need my beat fix:
Beta Lounge — home to over 750 sets from people as diverse as Derrick May, Jazza Nova, ed luna, DRC, Mark Farina and a host of German artists no one I know has ever heard of. The Jonah Sharp sets from ‘98 and ‘00 are long time favorites as are the sets from the Al-Haca Soundsystem and the Different Drummer Soundsystem.
Broken Beat Radio — for several years a reliable source for sets from the upcomers in the nu jazz, broken beat and tech-house scene. Recently it seems to have degenerated into a showcase for site host Argo, who I am not particularly excited by. Toshio Matsuura, DJ Sunshine and Los Roc have sets that are worth a listen or two. On occasion I have become obsessed with sets by Rob Paine and Russ Dewbury.
MPiii — a music sharing site for techno. There’s more music on this site than could be listened to in several lifetimes. Recent finds are a solid set by Russ Gabriel, a jazz influenced set spun by Carl Craig (which I should warn the more prudish has some dirty tracks) and a variety of live Daft Punk sets of which this is a good example. For awhile Kenny Dixon Jr.’s legendary set from the 2000 Detroit Electronic Music Festival was available but it seems to have disappeared. If someone reading this is interested in a copy leave me a comment and I will send it to you.
